Associate Deans and Department Heads

The Office of the Provost will host monthly virtual meetings for associate deans and department heads throughout the academic year. These sessions will alternate between informational sessions to share updates and answer questions regarding current academic and university business, and professional development sessions focused on specific key topics for successful leadership. The agenda and materials for each session will be posted to the Academic Leaders Portal in advance.

New Dean and Department Head Orientation Materials

New Dean and Department Head Orientation

Each year, the Office of the Provost holds an orientation session for newly appointed deans and department heads. This session is held prior to the start of the academic year and occasionally in January for newly appointed academic leadership hired outside of the usual hiring cycle. The Fall 2024 orientation session will take place on Friday, August 23rd, 2024 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Information on how to RSVP will be sent to participants directly via email.

Topics for the orientation include an overview of the role, University policy, and campus resources; the agenda will be sent to participants to RSVP in advance of the orientation.

Associate Deans and Department Heads who are new to UConn will also attend a half-day virtual HR orientation as well as a self-led “second day” of HR orientation covering University policy, compliance, safety, and diversity and inclusion information through the University’s learning management system, Learning@Work. You will be notified of the session assignment through your UConn email after your hire date.

Academic Leaders Portal

The Academic Leaders Portal is an intranet hosted on Microsoft Teams for Academic Leaders (e.g., Dean, Associate Deans, Regional Campus Directors, & Department Heads). It serves as a repository of information to support school/unit leaders in doing their work. It also provides easy access to relevant UConn information.

Associate Deans for Academic Affairs Meetings

Associate Deans for Academic Affairs (ADAA) generically to refers any Associate Dean and Directors of Academic Affairs on regional campuses with responsibilities that include undergraduate or graduate education, academic program and curricula oversight, and/or faculty affairs in their portfolio.

A dedicated meeting for this group will take place twice per semester, starting in Fall 2023. The purpose of this forum is to provide a supportive space for leaders in these roles, equipping them with contextual information and rationales to effectively oversee and support actions within their respective school or college.

Research Advisory Groups

Research Advisory Groups

The Office of the Vice President for Research’s (OVPR) mission of supporting and advancing faculty research greatly depends on involvement and input from faculty and from UConn’s schools/colleges. To that end, the Vice President for Research (VPR) has established research advisory groups to facilitate communication and collaboration between the OVPR and stakeholders across the university.

These groups meet regularly to discuss research-related issues that impact UConn/UConn Health faculty and provide opportunities for faculty to convey concerns to the VPR and the OVPR executive team and to work together to identify and implement solutions. The Research Deans' Council (RDC) may be of special interest to Associate Deans and Department Heads and meets twice per semester.
