Provost & Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

Peter J. Nicholls began his tenure as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Connecticut in 2005. He joined UConn after serving as provost and academic vice president at Colorado State University. Before joining Colorado State University, he was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University and held a position at Kansas State as professor of mathematics.

A native of Great Britain, he received his bachelor of science from London University and his doctorate in mathematics from Cambridge University. He has researched the field of pure mathematics, focusing on the study of discrete groups, Riemann surfaces and topological dynamics. He has published numerous scholarly articles and his research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation.

Role of the Provost
The Provost is the University's chief academic officer and is responsible for all academic programs at the main campus in Storrs, at the five regional campuses at Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, Torrington, and Waterbury, and the School of Law in Hartford. The role of the Provost is to lead in the development of academic priorities for the institution and to work with the faculty and administration on the appropriate distribution of University resources in the achievement of the highest standard of excellence in all our areas of academic engagement.
