About the Provost

Dr. Peter J. Nicholls

Provost Peter NichollsDr. Peter J. Nicholls arrived at the University of Connecticut on March 1, 2005 as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Provost is the University's chief academic officer and is responsible for all academic programs at the main campus in Storrs, at the five regional campuses in Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, Torrington, and Waterbury, and the Law School in Hartford.

Dr. Nicholls came to UConn from Colorado State University where he served for three years as the Provost and Academic Vice President. In his capacity as chief academic officer at Colorado State University, he had oversight for all academic programs for a campus of 25,000 students.

Before his years at CSU, Dr. Nicholls served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University from 1991 to 2002. At Northern Illinois University, he served as a Professor of mathematical sciences from 1971 to 1991 and as Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences from 1987 to 1991.

Dr Nicholls' research is in Pure Mathematics and has focused on the study of discrete groups, Riemann surfaces, and topological dynamics. He has published a total of 27 scholarly articles in major refereed journals world-wide. His research work has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and his research monograph, "The Ergodic Theory of Discrete Groups," was published by Cambridge University Press. Dr. Nicholls has been an invited speaker at many conferences and colloquia in the US and Europe.

Dr. Nicholls received his doctorate in mathematics from Cambridge University in England in 1970 and a Bachelor of Science degree in the same subject from London University in 1967.

Dr. Nicholls has been married to Trudy, a computer science professional, for 38 years and they have 3 married children, David, a Mathematics professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago; Katharine, an accountant living in central Illinois; and Stephen, an MBA student at MIT.
